Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate Offers Excellent Machinability

Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate is manufactured by impregnating cotton fabric with phenolic resin, followed by curing under heat and pressure. It is classified as a Thermal Class E insulating material and provides excellent mechanical properties, oil resistance, and reliable dielectric performance.

Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate is characterized by high mechanical strength, good moisture resistance, and satisfactory heat resistance. While its electrical properties are generally lower than those of glass fabric laminates, it offers superior machinability and toughness, making it a widely used material in electrical and mechanical applications. Grade 3025 is one of the most commonly used phenolic laminates in the electrical industry.

With a density of approximately 1.35 g/cm³, phenolic paper and cotton cloth laminates weigh roughly half as much as aluminum, making them suitable for lightweight structural applications in electrical equipment, machinery, and certain transportation industries.

Chemical Resistance

3025 Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate exhibits good resistance to chemical corrosion. It can withstand exposure to:

● Organic solvents

● Organic acids

● Dilute inorganic acids

This makes it suitable for a variety of industrial and chemical equipment applications. However, it is generally not recommended for long-term use in alkaline environments.

Excellent Machining Performance

Phenolic laminates can be processed using a wide range of conventional machining methods, including:

● Sawing

● Drilling

● Turning

● Milling

● Planing

● Routing

After machining, properly processed components should remain free from cracking, chipping, or delamination.

Sheets with a thickness below 3 mm can often be punched directly. Cold-punching grades can be processed without heating, while standard grades typically require preheating before punching operations.

Because of its excellent fabrication characteristics, 3025 Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate is widely used for manufacturing insulation components in low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical equipment, motors, and electronic devices.

Advantages of 3025

Compared with Phenolic Paper Laminate, 3025 Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate offers:

● Higher mechanical strength

● Better bonding strength

● Higher impact resistance

● Superior toughness

● Better machining performance

● Improved wear resistance

These characteristics make it particularly suitable for mechanically loaded insulation components and precision-machined parts.

Limitations

Although 3025 Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminate provides excellent mechanical performance, it also has relatively higher water absorption compared with glass fabric laminates.

When exposed to moisture, its electrical insulation properties may decrease. In humid environments, prolonged moisture absorption can also promote mold growth. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for long-term use in hot and humid climates where superior moisture resistance is required.

Typical Applications

● Insulating washers

● Slot wedges

● Insulating rods

● Electrical spacers

● Terminal supports

● Low-voltage motor insulation parts

● Electrical insulation structural components

● Switchgear insulation parts

● Mechanical wear-resistant components

● Industrial fixtures and tooling

Comparison with Glass Fabric Laminates

Compared with phenolic paper laminates and Phenolic Cotton Cloth Laminates, glass fabric laminates such as G10, G11, FR4, and epoxy glass sheets provide:

● Higher mechanical strength

● Better electrical insulation performance

● Lower moisture absorption

● Superior heat resistance

● Better dimensional stability

Although flexural strength, tensile strength, and impact strength may decrease at elevated temperatures, glass fabric laminates generally maintain significantly higher performance levels than phenolic paper and cotton cloth laminates.

For applications requiring higher operating temperatures, greater mechanical loads, or improved electrical insulation reliability, glass fabric laminates are often the preferred choice.
