What is FR4 Material?

FR4 is a multipurpose glass epoxy laminate that features flame-retardant properties, as indicated by the letters “FR” in its name. It is often the substrate material of choice for electrical insulation, recognizable by its signature green color. The material’s low coefficient of thermal expansion allows it to resist contraction and expansion under exposure to fluctuating operating temperatures, making it ideal for high-temperature applications. It’s exceptional dielectric properties also contribute to its capability as an insulator.

FR4 has no moisture absorbing properties, so it will not expand or contract when humidity changes and is not affected by direct exposure to water, making it excellent for marine components.

Composition of FR4

Fiberglass Cloth

The base of FR4 is fiberglass cloth, which gives it strength and dimensional stability. The cloth is woven into thin sheets, which helps the board stay strong and maintain its shape. Without this, the board could bend or break easily.

Epoxy Resin

The following important part is epoxy resin. This resin binds the fiberglass cloth together, making the whole structure solid. It also makes FR4 a flame-retardant material, which is vital in electronics. Besides fire protection, epoxy resin provides excellent electrical insulation. This helps keep electric currents where they should be, preventing short circuits.

Curing Agents

Curing agents harden the epoxy resin and give it stability. These chemicals ensure the resin sets properly, making the material more robust and reliable. Without curing agents, the board wouldn't be as stable.

Fillers

Fillers are added to improve the performance of FR4. They help make the material more durable and sometimes reduce production costs. Fillers also make the laminate easier to work with during the manufacturing process.

Fiberglass cloth, epoxy resin, curing agents, and fillers create a robust, flame-resistant material perfect for electronic boards.
